The Benefits of Blood Testing

Regular blood screening is an important part of preventing degenerative problems such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes and liver or kidney problems. It can also spot problems related to nutrition, such as electrolyte, vitamin and mineral levels, as well as problems related to hormonal imbalances. Patients may not be able to rely on your doctor for all the testing they require, however.

Doctors routinely order basic tests, such as blood cholesterol or fasting blood sugar, but may not bother with many other tests, such as thyroid hormone or basic nutrition screening. This means that many people with subtle internal imbalances can end up suffering from them for years. The symptoms of these imbalances are highly variable and can easily be mistaken for a cold, a mental problem or just feeling tired, so many patients never realize that they have a problem.

One option for patients is to request an annual blood screening covering all the major tests. This is especially helpful for older patients, since changes in the body can have an enormous effect on overall health and quality of life. Many doctors who won’t suggest a screening themselves are willing to perform one when asked. A good insurance policy that offers preventive coverage should pay at least part of the cost of the screening.

Another option is to have the screenings performed without a doctor’s request. In this case, the patient may need to cover the cost of the tests out of pocket, since insurance companies are less likely to provide this kind of screening. The screening itself may cost less, however, and the patient retains complete control over which tests are performed.

Patients who live in large cities, such as Glendale, AZ, often have access to independent testing center. Those who live in smaller communities may need to travel to the nearest lab, but many testing centers work with a wide range of labs to provide services all over the United States, making it simple to get necessary screenings without too much inconvenience.
